The Fourth Finger

The tradition of wearing a wedding ring on the fourth finger (the ring finger) of the left hand dates back to ancient Egyptian and later Greek and Roman beliefs. People believed that a vein (the vena amoris, or "vein of love") ran directly from this finger to the heart. Although this has no medical basis, the idea persisted for centuries.

In some countries, including Russia and parts of Eastern Europe, wedding rings are traditionally worn on the right hand.

The Material

Gold, and later silver, symbolize durability and value. Like the promise it represents, a wedding ring was meant to withstand the test of time.

History of the Wedding Ring

Ancient Times

The oldest evidence of wedding rings comes from Ancient Egypt (around 2800–2000 BC), where rings were woven from reeds or hemp, and later made from leather, bone, or ivory.

The Romans adopted the custom but gave it a different meaning. An iron ring (anulus pronubus) symbolized not so much romantic love as a legal and financial contract of ownership and alliance between two families.

The Middle Ages and Christianity

From the early Middle Ages onward, the wedding ring became part of the Christian marriage ceremony. It represented the sacred union before God.

By the 9th century, the Catholic Church had begun to formally recognize marriage, and the wedding ring became a permanent element of the ceremony.

Modern Times

Today, wedding rings come in many different styles: classic gold bands, rings with gemstones, engraved messages, or minimalist designs. Their meaning—a visible promise of love and commitment—has remained largely unchanged throughout the centuries.
