What is a promise ring?

You may know a promise ring by the name love ring. Regardless of the name, with this ring you make a promise to your girlfriend. The meaning varies from couple to couple, but generally it involves:

  • Romantic commitment: A promise ring is a way to show your commitment to the relationship, without already being ready for an engagement.
  • Future promise: Some people give a promise ring as a precursor to an engagement ring, as a promise that they want to get married one day.
  • Personal meaning: The ring can also represent a promise unique to your relationship: buying a house together, a desire to have children....

Promise ring or engagement ring?

There is sometimes some confusion between promise rings and engagement rings. They both symbolise love between two people.

Yet there are a few differences. An engagement ring is part of a proposal. It is an essential item to propose to your girlfriend.

With a promise ring, this need not be the case. Yes, it can be a symbol of a marriage promise, but it can also be about another commitment. You fill in the meaning yourself.

Furthermore, there is a difference on which finger you wear the ring. Usually, an engagement ring is worn on the left ring finger. For a promise ring, there are no ‘rules’. Some people will choose to put a promise ring on a different finger. It is a personal choice.
